Adam and Eve Alms Dish

Dutch, 16th c.

Brass. One of the best -- and it's from the Netherlands, not Nuremberg! Beautifully soft, well-worn depiction of the Temptation of Eve, with a little rabbit who's turned his back on the whole affair. Dutch inscription, VREEST GODT means "Fear God," but the rest is Dutch to me! Punched decoration around rim. Perhaps the ears of wheat and the rabbit symbolize the fertility of Paradise. Old minor repairs, small rim split, old suspension holes.

18-1/2" diam.
