Carving of the Mocking of Christ

Flemish, 1450-75

Probably walnut. Fabulous carving of the mocking of Christ. Imaginative way of combining two jeering men and Christ into a single carving. Probably part of a retable group behind an altar but it does not look too "holy" and would show well in a secular setting. Carved from a hollow branch. Loss to one figure, other minor losses -- consistent with being 550 years old.

15-1/2" h, approx 5-1/2" w.
