Chocolate Spoon

Dutch, c.1680

Pewter. An unusually fine example: spiral stem, very well modeled hoof with detailed horse shoe and hairy hocks! Drinking chocolate was fashionable in this period. The hot chocolate needed frequent stirring in the cup to prevent it from coagulating. Small spoons like this were made for that purpose -- they are often miscalled children's spoons, but they were in fact for adults. Good excavated condition, no restoration.
