Quill Knife

English, 17th century

Bone, iron. Rare, fascinating desk accessory. Used for cutting and sharpening the nib of a quill pen. The iron blade folds into the acanthus-decorated bone handle. A quill pen needed sharpening after a few lines, and one in constant use lasted about a week. This knife was a necessity then -- and now, no computer work station can afford to be without one. Good condition, wear but no restoration.
