Tea Cannister or Caddy

Dutch,

Tin-Glazed Earthenware. One of the very few caddies that retains its lid. Mark of Adriaen Pynacker (1690-94). Heraldic decoration of two lions rampant holding a shield with lion rampant: the arms of the Prince of Orange (in 1695 William of Orange was ruling Britain with his wife and cousin Mary.) Also chinoiserie decoration of bird, chrysanthemum and foliage, all in a deep cobalt blue. European heraldry with baroque scrolling meets traditional Chinese motifs! A true collector's piece. Glaze-paint loss to one side, lid repaired, otherwise normal frittering.
