Powder Horn

Germanic, 1550-1625

Horn, silver. A very early horn with exquisite craftsmanship. One one side is a stag hunt, on the other a bear hunt. The scenes are in low relief, achieved by pressing boiled horn into molds. They were then carved and engraved to achieve the crisp details. A masterpiece. The end has a silver cap, with unidentified touch marks. The tip is made from a separate piece of horn, and the wooden plug is appropriate. Very minor losses appropriate for its age, otherwise good condition. Plug replaced.

10" l x 3-1/2" w. x 1-1/4" d.
