Pair of Carved Gothic Rails

English., c.1450

Oak. Probably the top rail of a screen in a church (see last image, 15th-c. screen in Lavenham Church, Suffolk, UK). Deeply undercut carving, scary critters from a medieval bestiary, and bunches of grapes. Grapes were a Christian symbol -- water into wine, wine stands for Christ's blood in communion etc… A rare chance for a real eye-catcher in your room or hallway. Would (reluctantly) split. One bunch of grapes lost, otherwise expected minor losses and surface scars, but basically excellent for their age. No restoration.

74" and 74-1/2" l, x 6" w.
