Flintlock Pistol Holster

English, 17th c.

Leather, brass. Made for a cavalryman's flintlock pistol with loops for a strap to fix it to the harness just in front of the knee. It's large -- flintlock pistols were 22 - 24" long. Superb surface: lightly polished, crackled leather with dulled brass lip and engraved finial with four English roses. It's one of the best 17th-century objects around, and we had to beat out the curator from Newark Museum, UK, to get it -- we won because we could buy it on the spot: he had to get committee approval. Very good original condition with age-appropriate minor losses and wear.

17-1/2" l; lip 6-1/4" x 4-1/4"
