Brass Plate

Dutch or English, c. 1725

Brass. We see plenty of plates made of pewter, silver or ceramics, but brass? Not so much. This one is of heavy cast and spun brass, decorated with 4 rings of fine double-reeding. It has a sturdy foot, and shows no signs of having been used for eating. Did it hold wafers at communion? Sweetmeats for dessert? Supper for the cat? Your guess is as good as ours. Whatever its use, it's rare, attractive and worthy of a place in your collection. Good condition with tiny nick on rim, no restoration.
