Carving of Marriage Initials

English, late 16th c.

Oak. Just follow the curves of that "M"! It may be the finest carved initial that you'll see. The ampersand is a beauty too. All this accompanied by a bunch of grapes (for Christianity), an oak (for jolly old England) and a pomegranate (for the resurrection and eternal life.) Probably from a court or a press cupboard as a wedding gift to M (groom) E (family) C (bride). And all this in a small panel that will stand sweetly on your dressing table, your desk or your mantel shelf. Minor losses, top edge reduced.

10" x 4-34".
