Pair of Diminutive Candleholders

N. Europe, 1650-75

Brass. Rare and beautiful on three counts: they're profusely decorated, they're a pair, and they're tiny. The scrolling foliage is typical of the 17th century, but very untypical is the crowned heraldic shield on the bobeche. They may be from Northern France, but they could equally be from a Baltic country. Wherever they were made, you'll travel a long distance before you find another pair as good. Basically good condition: minor age-splits, iron reinforcement to pean on one.

3-3/4" h, 3-3/4" diam
