Pair of Hester Bateman Mote Spoons

London, c.1775

Sterling silver Mote spoons were used to skim tea leaves (motes) floating in the cup. The spear-ended finial cleared the spout of the teapot from leaves clogging it. Tea before tea bags! Hester Bateman was the leading woman silversmith in Georgian England. Mote spoons were uniquely English and were made only in London. Good condition, hallmarks worn, no restoration.
