Romayne Portrait of Gentleman

English, c.1530

Oak. Rare is hardly the word for it: 90% of "Romayne" portraits are in profile, 9% are full face and 1%, at the most, are 3/4 face. The carver was one of the best (just look at that mouth and beard!) but the perspective was a bit beyond him -- with an utterly charming result! The English Renaissance motifs of flowers, foliage and scrolls are well done. Of all the Romaynes we have handled, this is perhaps our favorite. Good condition with very minor losses.
